 Unfortunately that still wasn't enough. Gennai tells the Digidestined of the final enemy, the one responsible for all of the evil. He is Apocalymon, and he is created from the data of discarded Digimon. Every dark urge and failure was combined to create this dark menace.
The Digidestined try to stop Apocalymon in another dimension, but he quickly defeats them. He destroys their crests and tags and erases them from existance.

 The Digidestined realize the power of the crests was inside them all along. The rest of the Digimon now digivolve, this time without using the crests. They're able to defeat Apocalymon, and with the power of the Digivices, they contain the supernova created by his death.
Finally, after all this time, it's over. Both worlds have been saved, and peace has returned to the Digital World. But the Digidestined won't get to enjoy this quiet time. They must leave the Digital World, because if they stay, they may never be able to leave.
Recovering from the damage done to it, the Digital World is being reformatted. The children aren't a part of the Digital World and can't stay.
Bidding a tearful farewell to their friends, the Digidestined leave, knowing that it's good-bye for now, but not forever.
